Nausea No More: Natural Solutions for a Settled Stomach

Nausea is an uncomfortable sensation that can strike at any time, often leaving you feeling unsettled and unable to function at your best. While it is a common symptom, it’s important to understand what’s causing it and how you can find natural relief. Let’s explore what nausea is, how it occurs, and ways that I support patients in my Adelaide clinic and online members with Naturopathy to get rid of it.

What is Nausea?

Nausea is the sensation of wanting to vomit, often accompanied by stomach discomfort, dizziness, and sweating. It is not a condition on its own but rather a symptom triggered by various factors, including digestive issues, stress, hormonal changes, and motion sickness.

Physiological Responses to Nausea

When nausea strikes, your body goes into response mode:

  • The brain’s vomiting center (located in the medulla) is activated by signals from the gut, inner ear, or bloodstream.

  • The stomach slows down digestion, causing a buildup of food and acid, this could cause reflux too.

  • You may experience increased saliva production, dizziness, and sweating as part of your body’s autonomic response.

Two Common Causes of Nausea

(I teach my members about 17 causes inside Tummy Rescue Hub)

🔸 Gut Dysbiosis & Poor Digestion
An imbalance in gut bacteria (dysbiosis) can lead to bloating, sluggish digestion, and nausea. This is often linked to food sensitivities, poor stomach acid levels, or an overgrowth of harmful microbes.

🔸 Stress & Nervous System Dysfunction
The gut-brain connection plays a significant role in nausea. High stress and anxiety can overstimulate the nervous system, leading to digestive upset and nausea due to vagus nerve dysfunction.

Natural Home Remedies for Nausea

🍵 Ginger
Ginger has been used for centuries to soothe nausea. Whether taken as tea, fresh slices, or in supplement form, its active compounds help relax the stomach muscles and improve digestion.

🌱 Peppermint
Peppermint tea or essential oil (inhaled or applied to the wrists) can help reduce nausea by calming the digestive tract and easing spasms.

Lifestyle Adjustments for Nausea Relief

🥗 Eat Small, Frequent Meals
Large meals can overwhelm digestion, leading to nausea. Eating smaller portions throughout the day helps regulate blood sugar and prevent stomach discomfort.

💧 Stay Hydrated
Sipping on herbal teas or electrolyte-rich drinks can prevent dehydration, which is a common nausea trigger. Avoid gulping large amounts of water (especially cold) at once, as this can worsen symptoms.

Practical Tips to Settle Your Stomach

Acupressure (P6 Point on Wrist)
Applying gentle pressure to the P6 point (located three fingers below the wrist) has been shown to reduce nausea, particularly in cases of motion sickness or pregnancy-related nausea.

🌬 Fresh Air & Deep Breathing
Stepping outside for fresh air and practicing slow, deep breaths can help calm the nervous system and reduce nausea, especially if triggered by stress or strong odors.

Nausea can be frustrating, but understanding its root causes and implementing natural strategies can make a significant difference. Whether you opt for herbal remedies, simple lifestyle shifts, or practical techniques, there are many ways to regain balance and keep nausea at bay.

A bit about me!

I am Danielle Elliott a qualified Naturopath and the owner of Tummy Rescue.

I have been helping kids & adults improve their health for over 16 years, with the last 11 years concentrating on helping patients with any kind of gut disorder. I began focussing on everything gut related after my husband was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. And lucky I did……as my husband and both our kids have Coeliac Disease and my daughter has a dairy allergy.

So…. I am well and truly where I am meant to be!

I love being able to help people to soothe and calm their symptoms, investigate the causes and support and improve their gut function.

I also get to write educational pieces to train practitioners and am often interviewed for podcasts and summits, which is another really rewarding part of my work. I love educating people (this is something I do in every consult), because I do believe knowledge is power. It gives you the tools to make the changes you need to!

So, when you opt-in to my E-book, you are beginning on a journey of learning and discovery, of how you can reduce your symptoms of bloating, gas & pain and improve your gut health.

I would be honoured to help you along the way.

Danielle xoxo
