'Tis the Season for Relief: 5 Ways Christmas May Help Improve IBS Symptoms

Christmas is a time for us to slow down (well maybe after the mayhem), take time out, and be appreciative of all that we do have. While the holiday season can have stressful aspects (& for some this can worsen their IBS symptoms), there are several aspects of this festive time that could surprisingly offer reprieve to individuals dealing with IBS symptoms. Here are five reasons why Christmas might just provide some relief from your IBS symptoms:

  1. Mindful Eating: Amidst the array of delectable dishes and festive treats, that we may all overindulge in, on the big day there is also more time. We have the luxury to take time with our meals, and savour every mouthful, which can help with improving our digestion. We are eating at tables, with loved ones in a stae of ‘rest & digest’ and not under the same pressure and deadlines that come with work, which put us in ‘fight or flight’ mode and can worsen bloating, pain, and gas.

  2. Reduced Stress: Contrary to the perception of holiday stress, the Christmas season often fosters an environment of relaxation and joy. The festive ambiance, spending time with loved ones, and engaging in enjoyable activities can help reduce stress levels. Stress is a known trigger for IBS flare-ups, and being on holiday can help to reduce those symptoms.

  3. Increased Physical Activity: For many with a very sedentary job, being on holiday allows more time for movement and physical activity. Simply sitting less and moving more, can help our digestive system to work more effectively and be less likely to experience things like constipation and gas. Movement massages our gut and support healthier gut motility.

  4. Social Support and Connection: Christmas is a time for gatherings and connecting with friends and family. Social support plays a crucial role in managing chronic conditions like IBS. Having a strong support system and feeling connected can reduce anxiety, provide emotional comfort, and positively impact overall well-being, which, in turn, can help alleviate IBS symptoms.

  5. Time for Rest and Self-Care: The holiday season often allows for more time off work or a break from regular ‘busy’ routines. This extra time can be utilized for self-care practices like meditation, relaxation techniques, or simply getting more sleep. Adequate rest and self-care are essential components in managing IBS symptoms as they contribute to overall stress reduction and improved gut health.

In conclusion, while the festive season might seem daunting for individuals managing IBS, it can surprisingly offer relief from symptoms for many. From mindful eating to reduced stress levels and increased physical activity, the holiday spirit can give us more time to look after ourselves better and address some of the lifestyle factors that impact our gut health.

If this is the case for you, then this period does offer insight into some of the lifestyle factors that are worth keeping up during the year (even when things do get busy), to help maintain your health.

A bit about me!

I am Danielle Elliott a qualified Naturopath and the owner of Tummy Rescue.

I have been helping kids & adults improve their health for over 16 years, with the last 11 years concentrating on helping patients with any kind of gut disorder. I began focussing on everything gut related after my husband was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. And lucky I did……as my husband and both our kids have Coeliac Disease and my daughter has a dairy allergy.

So…. I am well and truly where I am meant to be!

I love being able to help people to soothe and calm their symptoms, investigate the causes and support and improve their gut function.

I also get to write educational pieces to train practitioners and am often interviewed for podcasts and summits, which is another really rewarding part of my work. I love educating people (this is something I do in every consult), because I do believe knowledge is power. It gives you the tools to make the changes you need to!

So, when you opt-in to my E-book, you are beginning on a journey of learning and discovery, of how you can reduce your symptoms of bloating, gas & pain and improve your gut health.

I would be honoured to help you along the way.

Danielle xoxo
